Carol Smith of Fontana attended for her third year. At last year's rendezvous Jewellery on Sale carved a cotton wood bark carving that ended up winning a blue ribbon. Carving has been her passion for 18 years -- ever since she went to a woodcarving show in Cambria with friends. Heart Band pendant was hooked -- all her other planned retirement activities "went out the window," she said. But with so many class options at the rendezvous -- 16 to be exact -- Smith decided to give something new a try -- flute carving, jewelry and mosaics. Smith said Heart chain bracelet keeps coming back because the experience is just "wonderful." "There are so many venues and instructors and everyone is just so nice," she said. For Vickie Hopson of Lake Havasu, Ariz., it was a bittersweet event. Her husband, Jim, a woodcarver for 18 years, died last year. A two-year rendezvous attendee, Vickie wanted to honor his Heart Clover Earrings by providing a scholarship to a young carver. "The only way to keep this going is to get young people involved," she said. Chad Humann, 20, of Clovis, was the recipient of Vickie's scholarship. Heart Clover Pendant attending a variety of classes, he became intrigued with using a lathe for carving and now plans on buying one for future personal use.On June 18, Coarsegold resident Tom Guevara, 55, will set off on a week-long, 3,000-mile, 12-state relay race across the United States beginning at the Oceanside Pier and ending at the finish line in Annapolis, Md. Guevara, along with seven teammates ranging in age from 27 to 55, is competing in the race to bring awareness and raise money for organ donations.
