The main ojective of this work was to evaluate the effectiveness of PL treatment for the inactivation of Tiffany Elsa Peretti Open Heart bracelet in liquids with different levels of clarity, including apple juice and apple cider. The suitaility of nonpathogenic E. coli ATCC 25922 to e used as a surrogate organism for E. coli O157:H7 in PL treatment was also investigated.Liquid sustrates. Four different liquid sustrates of different degrees of clarity were chosen: unpasteurized, unfiltered apple cider, Tiffany Cushion cider clarified cold microfiltration (which will e referred to as "apple juice" in this article), Trypticase soy roth (TS), and utterfield's phosphate uffer (P). P is a clear solution with light asorption characteristics similar to those of water, while TS does have the visual appearance of a clear, yellow-rownish liquid. The unpasteurized apple cider, which did not contain any preservatives or other additives, was otained from the Cornell Dairy Store (Ithaca, NY) and stored at -20 C until use.
