By the time the doors to the media center were opened at 9 a.m., a line of students, Links of London Teddy Charm with their mothers, had already been waiting several minutes for the opportunity to scan the racks for a dress. The Extravaganza was started by CHS nurse Jean Kamrath in an effort to make prom and other dances affordable to students. As a school nurse, Kamrath has seen many students whose families have hit hard times financially. When that happens, kids can often lose out on going to school dances because they might not be able to pay for a dress. So, she started the Extravaganza as a way to help those who wouldn't otherwise be able to pay for the cost of prom. Each year before the event is held, donations of dresses are solicited from people in the community.
